It’s 1986, Hollywood Blvd, California. JC and his friend Kevin are out crusin’. They’ve been drinking, having a good time, girl watching, doing what all young men like that do on a Friday night. Music loud and bumping.

A car going the opposite direction flashes past w/what sounds like the N word shouted at JC. The same car quickly pulls a u-turn and begins to follow. JC pulls over. The other car pulls in behind them. JC bounds out of his truck, a knife held low alongside his thigh. He gets to the car behind him quickly. He looks in and sees an old acquaintance of his, a Kat named Armando. JC had played high school baseball with Armando and his brother Willy. JC peers in the car and notes Willy’s girlfriend; there’s someone in the backseat he can’t quite see; there’s Michelle (an ex-girlfriend of JC’s) and Armando. JC briefly wonders where Willy is.

“What did you call me?” JC asked Armando. JC is Armenian. Armando is Hispanic.

“I called you ‘Jack!’”, Armando said. Then he asked, “Hey dawg, we know this party that’s happening right now. You wanna come along maybe?”

JC looks again in the car, doesn’t want to be w/Michelle, so he tells Armando to hang on. JC runs back to his truck, puts the knife back under the seat and tells his friend Kevin that they’re going to follow Armando to a party. Only JC is going to ride w/Armando and them, so he’s going to have Michelle come ride with Kevin because Kevin is going to drive JC’s truck.

JC settles in the backseat. Asks Armando, “Hey, where’s Willy?” Armando says his brother is already at the party, or is going to meet them there, or maybe Willy joined the Navy, or Willy was somewhere doing CIA spy shit for all JC heard because that’s when he noticed the girl in the backseat w/him. He feels his heart do a flip flop. He is instantly attracted to this woman like he’d never been attracted before. Call it fate, call it blind luck. In a word; JC is smitten. He ignores everybody else in the car and begins talking to her. JC quickly learns her name is Jackie and that she’s Armando and Willy’s older sister by one year: she’s 19. JC also learns that 19 years old or not, Jackie’s family is ultra old fashioned and conservative and Jackie has a 10:00pm curfew. JC also learns that Jackie is demure, soft-spoken and painfully shy. Getting any conversation out of her is difficult because she only answers direct questions, yet initiates no conversation of her own. Nevertheless, JC is determined to get to know this incredibly sexy and alluring creature.

So they’re at the party. Lour music. Keg beer. People everywhere. Especially party girls. Only JC, he has eyes for nobody but Jackie. Sure, he returns greetings and what have you, yet stays with Jackie. At one point JC goes outside, mugs a rose bush for a half dozen blooms and brings them to Jackie. She accepts them with a reserved smile. JC is very respectful and he and Armando get Jackie home in time for her curfew. As he and Armando drive back to the party, JC finds he cannot get Jackie out of his head.

Four days later JC is at work in his father’s auto body shop when Armando pops in. He tells JC that he has Jackie outside in the car. They were crusin’ by and thought they’d stop in to say “hello.” JC’s heart flip flops again at simply hearing Jackie’s name, and he wonders at it.

JC goes out and says “Hi” to Jackie. Armando suggests that JC come over later, after work. JC thinks that’s a fine idea indeed. He hopes the invitation idea was Jackie’s. Flip flop.

Later JC drives over and discovers Armando, Kevin, Michelle, and Jackie all kickin’ it on Jackie’s parents’ front porch. JC joins them. After about 10 minutes, JC asks Jackie if she wants to get some ice cream.

Now, as I said earlier, Jackie’s family was very old fashioned when it came to their female children, so there’d be some deceptions practiced. Armando, Kevin and JC all left first. Jackie would leave with Michelle, parents having no idea they were meeting the boys later. This would become standard practice. Jackie’s participation in this practice indicated to JC that Jackie was also interested in JC. Flip Flop.

They all met down at the 3/Flavors. JC buys Jackie an ice cream. He then convinces her to ride in his truck with him. The ride is thru Griffin Park. They are alone together for the first time.

(Listen: JC’s eyes sparking with the telling of this because he admits that it was there and then that he knew he was going to make her his. JC’s smile is contagious as he describes Jackie as unique and unlike any girl he’d ever kicked it with before; she’s beautiful and super smart; she’s fascinating in her shyness, yet direct in her repartee; she’s both wholesome and virtuous. JC’s intrigue was, at the very least, ten times more powerful than with any girl before.)

JC had her back at the ice cream shop in time for her to make her 8:00pm weeknight curfew.

JC soon enrolled in a continuation school in order to finally achieve his high school diploma. As fate would have it, said school was very near Jackie’s home, thus JC found himself at her house nearly every night of the week, shamming her parents that he was there to kick it with Armando, when in reality he was there to be with Jackie. Jackie, in her turn, kept JC coming around by offering to do his homework. JC’s homework from that point on began receiving straight A’s.

As I said, JC and Jackie were forced to practice deceit in order to meet outside of Jackie’s parents’ home. Thus Kevin and Michelle became an important part of the conspiracy. Jackie would leave with Michelle again and again and again, yet would always end up in Jack’s truck down the road. This went on until Kevin obtained his own apartment. Now all four of them had a place to kick it. As things turned out, Kevin and Michelle also hooked up.

One night, Jackie and JC are sitting on the edge of the bed when JC finally, after 6 months, works up the courage to kiss her for the very first time. Jackie kisses him back at first, but then she suddenly pushes him away. She explains that she’s only too aware of his reputation as a bit of a player and she’s not interested in anything other than a serious relationship.

The very next day, Jack dressed in his Sunday best, drove to Jackie’s house, marched up to the front door, rang the bell, then announced his good intentions RE Jackie to her mother, and he asked permission to court Jackie. Permission granted.

They then date for seven years, from 1986 thru 1993. They’re practically inseparable. And then one day, in the late summer of 1993, they’re driving thru the afternoon when the sun manages to catch Jackie just right. Her brown eyes twinkle like gold coins and her hair flashes like black pearl. JC believes with all his heart and all his soul that this beautiful woman is who he should spend his life with. He need but ask. Flip Flop.

JC: Hey, you maybe wanna get married?

Jackie: Why? You asking?

JC: Yeah- I guess I am.

Jackie: Somehow I thought this would be more romantic.

JC: You wanna get married or not?

Jackie: Yeah. I want to get married.

One year later, on September 1994, JC and Jackie are married. At the time that I am writing this (04-07-09), they are still married and very much in love. They have two sons; Christopher 13 years old, and Simon, 11 years old. They’ve been together for 26 years!
